Going Green with Latchways...
In the UK, many cities are encouraging green roofs on new developments.  2008 saw the launch of the London Plan which included the first firm policy on living (green) roofs in the UK.
In Europe, green roofs have been popular since the ecological movement of the 1960's and are widely recognised as offering a series of benefits including:
  • Biodiversity - offering a potential habitat to a wide range of wildlife and wild plants.
  • Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) - minimising the rate of surface water "run off", removing pollutants such as hydrocarbons and improving the local environment of people and wildlife alike.
  • Provide effective thermal insulation, therefore reducing heating and cooling energy demands to maintain buildings environments.
  • Reducing emissions of long wave radiation, thus reducing urban "heat island" effects in summertime.
  • Self-sustaining as the green roof adapts to the locality.

There is a legal responsibility to ensure anyone required to work at height is suitably protected.  The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 covers construction work including the maintenance of buildings and, in conjunction with the Work at Height Regulations 2005, any designer should give careful consideration to the reasons for working at height.  Wherever possible, working at height should be eliminated but in situations where this is not possible, such as carrying out maintenance on green roofs, fall protection systems should be used to minimise the risk to the end user.

Despite being self-sustaining, green roofs require periodic maintenance, ideally twice a year in Spring and Autumn.  The various types of maintenance required include irrigation, removing any dead or unwanted plants or litter, or even adding more plants if required.  To enable safe working when carrying out maintenance, fall protection systems are a necessity when designing and building.

By contacting Eurosafe Solutions at the design stage, we are able to offer advice to ensure that the appropriate fall protection is provided to guarantee end user safety when carrying out these maintenance works.
